This workweek , Netflix released Production IG ’s animated adaptation of Ultraman , bringing one of the most unequaled takes on theJapanese iconto life in a fascinating new way . Now that we ’ve had time to watch the first season , here ’s our roundup of what we have a go at it … and a few things that did n’t quite work out .
We Loved…
The wild action
In a world where superheroes are punching each other and ginormous enemy to thetune of billions at the box officeon a regular basis , the “ hombre in a rubbery suit ” action of Tokusatsu TV shows like Ultraman ’s predecessors might fall off as a bit quaint in comparison . But the Ultraman anime marries the sure-enough - school vibes of its source fabric with some rightfully unbelievable fight sequences that are fast , frenetic , and full of genuinely jaw - dropping bits of spectacle . They do n’t add up perhaps as on a regular basis as you might require from an anime based on an iconic “ freak plan of attack of the week ” show , but when they do , they are systematically a delight .
badly , if you take anything away from this : take in the quaternary episode of this series , which encounter Shinjiro go on his first “ real ” mission to hound down and do away with a rogue exotic killing and feasting on innocent humans in arcanum . The alien itself gets some fabulously imaginative competitiveness stage dancing that looks truly alien , and it ’s the sort of thing that can only be done in animation . It ’s a great instalment of increment for Shinjiro that culminate in some very satisfyingly badass moments , and is one of the most fun episodes of TV I ’ve seen so far this yr .
The connections to Ultraman’s wider legacy
It ’s almost unjust to reckon this as a plus for the anime view it ’s something the manga it ’s adapting does , but still . The agency Ultraman weaves itself into Ultraman ’s legacy at large , despite fundamentally being a sort of reboot that establishes itself as a direct sequel to the very first Ultraman television show , is still a delight in the anime . While it does this in precious , small manner ( like being packed with alien creatures inspire by classic Kaiju pattern from the original show ) , it ’s most interesting in how it acknowledges the stars of Ultraman series beyond the original show and incorporate them into the new narration revolving around Shinjiro .
Over the course of the time of year , Ultraman stick in us three crucial characters who are in reality already familiar to Ultraman fans : Dan Moroboshi , Seiji Hokuto , and Jack . While they ’re all different from their inspiration in some key ways ( specially Jack , whose story as a mysterious human who chooses to live among the unknown be in secret in Tokyo is being mostly saved for a second season ) , they ’re all really stars of erstwhile - school Ultra series .
Dan is the paladin of Ultra Seven , the 2d Ultraman show — except the twist is that or else of being an alien in disguise as he was in Seven , he ’s a homo who wants to prove that you do n’t call for Ultraman ’s exponent to get the occupation of maintain the Earth done . Seiji , meanwhile , is one one-half of the protagonists from Ultraman Ace — and instead of fusing with his partner Yuko to become Ultraman Ace as he did in his goggle box series , here he ’s a human teen give cybernetic branch after a ugly carpenter’s plane disaster , who wants to become Ultraman to economize the life of the aliens survive among humanity . Jack , who in the anime acts as Dan ’s informant among alienkind , is actually based on the star of , err , Ultraman Jack . You see what they did there !

It ’s an interesting way of integrate the heroes of Ultra serial beyond the original TV show . But the way the Zanzibar copal uses these characters , Dan and Seiji in fussy , to inform Shinjiro ’s arc — as he grows from uninitiated new adolescent to someone assured enough in himself to take on the capital responsibility of what being Ultraman means — put up not just fun fanservice for diehard follower of the wider Ultra saga , but some compelling dispute that really plays to Ultraman ’s intensity level as a more nuanced and complex take on the usually more unclouded - cutting ethics of the Spandexed superheroes who came before .
That it still felt Toku as all hell
One of the magnanimous divergences that Ultraman — and the manga it ’s free-base on — takes is that Shinjiro ’s personification of the hero is as a human - sized man in an Iron - Man - esque suit of armor , rather than a grinder who grows to the size of a skyscraper to punch equallyscale - hold monsters . And while Shinjiro and his fellow Ultramen go on to confront some larger - than - life foes by the end of the season , none of them are incisively elephantine - sized in the way you might expect of an Ultraman show .
And yet , Ultraman still does a lot to finger like its Tokusatsu predecessors — not just in its court to the series that come before , but even detail like having moments in battle in reality ground on stage dancing from motion capture actors , leading to moves and mo that sense like they ’ve been rive right out of any Ultraman or Super Sentai serial publication . Even the way the interior difference of opinion between Shinjiro , Dan , and Seiji plays out ( including the inevitable scraps between each other to see who the skillful Ultraman is ) sense evocative of the best dramatic Kamen Rider rivalries , a serial almost determine by conflict among its independent hero .
Ultraman might do a deal of thing differently , leverage its CG liveliness for the sort of action sequences and effects its live - action progenitors ca n’t , but it ’s still remindful enough of the Tokusatsu series that breathe in it to feel like a part of the same legacy of slightly goofy , hot - action superheroics that devotee know and love .

We Didn’t Love…
The Pacing
The curse of being an adaptation bring up its headspring early on in Ultraman , which simply just takes too long to get perish . In its effort to condense the early chapters of the manga down into the opening trey of episodes , it create a first impression that feel like it both study too much time to get the lump wheeling while not spending enough time elaborating on really introducing us to Shinjiro as a person beyond being his father ’s Logos .
In part , this is because the serial spends the full first episode make the premise that Shinjiro ’s Church Father Shin was the human partner Ultraman bonded with in the series ’ yesteryear , and has since lost his memories until the realization that he and his son have superpowers triggers their re - awakening . But the show skips about too much while establishing this conceit ; it ’s only by episode four that you feel like things really kick off , after Shin ’s past as Ultraman is established and Shinjiro is inducted as his heir to the curtain .
And when it kick off , it really kicks off — as I mentioned in the first place , sequence four is easy the standout episode of the time of year . But the fact it takes three of its 13 episodes to do so is a bummer . It means that the other two primary plotlines the show covers across its first season — an alien serial killer whale with inscrutable connexion to an up and come idol , and the comer of a new human cyborg want to be a third Ultraman — don’t get the time they need to really breathe , peculiarly the latter . Speaking of which …

The ‘real’ villains of the season
Seiji ’s electric arc in the back half of the season as Ultraman Ace combines with a really interesting twist — the genuine last - minute reveal of the season that Bemular , the villain Shin and Shinjiro scrapped with in the opening episode , who ’s set up as pull the twine behind difference across the whole season , is n’t in reality a bad bozo and has been manoeuvre Shinjiro ’s increment as an Ultra - gene - enhanced being . But while the twist itself is intriguing , it mean that the true battle of the season is ultimately … a crew of faceless alien mercenaries who come out of nowhere , to be let on as hitman who try out to toss off Seiji in the same plane catastrophe that trigger Shin ’s Ultraman memories a decade before the consequence of the serial .
stimulate through Seiji ’s arc in the last few episode intend there ’s no real time to fix up the presence of these mercenary ( lead by Ace Killer , another overnice nod to the actual Ultraman Ace show ) , so by the time it comes to the last episode of the time of year , they ’re precede and dealt with in a single 23 - minute sequence . That it also must help as the sexual climax of the entire season , when Shinjiro ’s powers reach their true potential and he becomes innately capable of firing off Ultraman ’s iconic Specium Ray attack , is kind of a huge bummer .
The whiplash of tones
Ultraman is at its best during its more serious moments , especially early on on when the existence of aliens among the universal populace of Tokyo is something the Science Special Search Party ( SSSP ) is trying to keep under wraps . It creates a tension and darkness that offers an interesting contrast to the “ giant hero vs. elephantine monster ” simplicity of its primogenitor series , one that the show sometimes intriguingly explore as Dan in particular tries to transmit to Shinjiro that there ’s a lot more at stakes when it comes to being Ultraman than just the public accolades .
So when it get to diverge from that in the back half as it recenters Rena — the perfection at the center of the murder secret that serve well as the opening electric discharge of the time of year — as an awkward love sake for Shinjiro to chase after in his spare sentence , there ’s a sudden swerving of tone that never really sit down quite right . One minute , you ’ve beget stranger carving bloody paths through humankind . The next , unenviable anime teen conversation about how ditzy Rena is !
There ’s always give way to be a place for some silliness in a world like Ultraman ’s . It is , after all , about a ( formerly ) Spandexed superhero who wrestle ( formerly ) gargantuan foreign kaiju for a bread and butter . But the way the show awkwardly dart between the hyperviolence Shinjiro , Dan , and eventually Seiji side as the Ultramen , and the clunky endeavour at a romantic subplot between Shinjiro and Rena in the back half , makes for a unearthly vibe at times . It never really gels — specially considering the show just ships Rena off to America at the end of the time of year , making her arc with Shinjiro palpate inconsequential .
