Archaeologists have made an astonishing discovery of a 5,500 - year - old megalithic grave in County Meath , Ireland .
The discovery was made by an agri - technology caller call Devenish in partnership with the University College Dublin ( UCD ) . They had been moil at the site for more than a year , and have now revealed their a la mode exciting finding in the region .
The team discovered two burial chamber hidden under a large stone cairn . Around the cairn they found the remains of six kerbstones , which in all probability formed the border . One of them was covered in Neolithic carving . Two other satellite tombs were also found .
“ For the archaeologists involved in this discovery , it is truly the discovery of a life , ” Dr Clíodhna Ní Lionáin , Devenish ’s lead archeologist for the task , said in astatement .
The specific locating of the discovery was the Brú na Bóinne composite at Dowth Hall . There have been a act of archaeological discoveries made here in recent weeks , including the unearthing of a previously undiscovered monument thanks to adrought .
It ’s thought that these monuments were create by some of Ireland ’s first farmers , with the discovery hoped to shed more light on the people and culture of the era . The historic site will be preserved for future generations to see .
“ This is the most significant megalithic discovery in Ireland in the last 50 years , since the archeological site of Knowth , ” Dr Steve Davis , from the UCD School of Archaeology , said in a command . “ The spate of archeological discoveries in Brú na Bóinne in recent week highlights what a globally significant place this is . ”
Brú na Bóinnemeansthe “ palace ” or “ mansion ” of the Boyne , and is locate close to the east coast of Ireland about 40 kilometers ( 25 mile ) north of Dublin . The area contains three enactment tomb – Knowth , Newgrange , and Dowth – establish about five millenary ago in the Neolithic or Late Stone Age . The tomb contain the largest collection of megalithic art ( colligate to large Stone ) in Western Europe .
The area of Dowth Hall contain other interesting discovery too , including a Late Neolithic henge , a Bronze Age enclosure , Early Medieval enclosures , and Late Medieval small town .
People will be able to tour the megalithic finds of the late excavation during Heritage Week , which pack station from August 18 to 26 .
