The Marvel Cinematic Universe ’s nonmigratory ch’i - wield multimillionaire with a fist of amber repay to Netflix last Friday inIron Fist time of year 2 , and astonishingly there was a lot about the season to get lawfully hype about . As is true of all thing , though , there were plenty of moment that preserve the show from being transcendent . Here ’s what we thought worked and what fell flat .

We Liked That…

The Daughters of the Dragon Pairing Got Even Better

Although their initial pairing in The Defenders descend off as a little forced , Misty Knight and Colleen Wing ’s arc over the course of Luke Cage and now Iron Fist ’s second season has evolved into one of the proficient partnership across the entire Marvel - Netflixverse . The bond between Misty and Colleen ( and the bully chemical science between Jessica Henwick and Simone Missick that comes with it ) elevates sequence of season two where the show starts to scuff — something not many other pairings in the cast can do .

As they both find themselves with trying to figure out what they want out of a crazy path filled with mystic destinies and robot implements of war , their friendly relationship , as freakish as it is — Colleen even acknowledges at one tip she scarcely even knows Misty , despite the wellness of their family relationship — constantly shines through . And with Colleen rising up as the Modern Iron Fist , she ’s going to need a partner she can count on . Misty ’s right : Knight , Wing … it does have a certain ring to it .

Colleen Wing Is Now a Superhero

Where oh where to begin with Colleen . Though Colleen has always been one of Iron Fist ’s stronger character , she really steps up to the plate and into the public eye in a major mode this season . With the Hand behind her , Colleen spends much of the season in search of a new family to call her own — something beyond her relationship with Danny where she can focus her excited DOE into something meaningful and worthwhile .

Even though she spend a fair amount of time fighting alongside Danny and Misty Knight throughout the season , Colleen finds function in the work she does at the local community gist that acts as a hub of sorts for the neck of the woods .

Being able to relate with and help the people she get together is what pee-pee Colleen realize that she has all the makings of a hero in the true sense of the Christian Bible , irrespective of whether she has especial abilities or not . That recognition is a big part of what make her surprising transformation into the newfangled Iron Fist so satisfying by the season ’s end . For two season , we ’ve watched as Colleen ’s selflessly thrown herself into battle , all for the saki of protecting those who ca n’t help themselves — something many of Marvel ’s other heroes only run to do when they themselves happen to be confront by bombastic - than - life situations . For Colleen , heroism is n’t just a calling , it ’s something that runs in her line , and now that she ’s a bona fide superhero , it ’s go to become an even more central part of the individual she is .

The Show Is Exploring the Iron Fist Mythos

The very last scene of Iron Fist time of year two is one of the highlighting of the whole show for mirthful record buff , as Danny takes off to “ detect himself ” in Asia , with the assist of a suddenly - uncommitted Ward ( it ’s very weird that he ’s just ok with jet off for months , seemingly ! ) and a lead story about an erstwhile corpse with the Iron Fist ’s serpent tattoo burned into its chest . That intuition fall from a man whose name will have comic Holy Scripture fans ’ heads irrupt : Orson Randall , a former Iron Fist research in the excellent Matt Fraction , Ed Brubaker , David Aja , and Travel Forman serial publication The Immortal Iron Fist .

Oh , and the head - exploding will continue , because it ’s quick disclose afterwards during a bar free-for-all in Hokkaido that Danny not only has Iron Fist powers again , but use them to conduct vim into two pistols he dual wields , as Randall did in the comics . The channeling of chi into weapons is a conception that issue forth up quite a chip in Immortal Iron Fist ’s exploration of the Fist ’s history — beyond Randall ’s pistols , the Pirate Queen of Pinghai Bay ( the heroine of the story from Colleen ’s puerility ) is actually the taradiddle of the first female Iron Fist , who channeled her exponent through a bow . Now that both Colleen and Danny have the top executive of the Iron Fist , setting up a enormously intriguing partnership in season three , comics fans are in for a dainty if the show start exploring the the like of Randall and other elements from Immortal Iron Fist in its story .

Mary/Walker Is About More Than Her Personalities

It ’s always interesting to see how the creative team of Netflix ’s Marvel shows incorporate supporting characters into each time of year in ways that make them gel with the MCU and carry the spirit of their amusing book twin .

Alice Eve ’s Mary Walker is a far watchword from her psionic mutant comics self , but in telephone exchange for pyrotechnic and shattered leather , Iron Fist introduces us to a much more interesting , and terrifying embodiment of the reference . Throughout the time of year , the mild - mannered Mary ( presumptively the prime personality ) sputter as her murderous alter ego Walker sporadically take control of their consciousness and do out on commission to remove Danny Rand . Depictions of dissociative indistinguishability disorder in music genre fiction are a somewhat controversial and knavish subject ; often , the disorderliness framed as being a variety of great power as opposed to the genial illness we define it as . ( There ’s also the debate as to whether DID is actually even genuine , but that ’s a discourse for another clock time . )

While Mary ’s DID is an crucial part of her character reference , thankfully it ’s not the only affair about her that Iron Fist high spot — and in fleshing who both Mary and Walker are as people , the show cease up making them much more compelling characters . Despite the fact that she does n’t take up nearly as much infinite as some of Iron Fist ’s personalities , Mary and Walker loom large in the moments they ’re on CRT screen . The subtext ( at least until her secret have out ) is that she ’s constantly play multiple game of Bromus secalinus with everyone around her and herself for work “ commonly . ” From the flavor of it , Mary and Walker are due back for next installments of Iron Fist and there ’s a unanimous chance we ’ll lastly get to run across her third identity — and presumptively , this one will be the one that gives her the “ Typhoid ” moniker she has in the cartoon strip .

The Fight Scenes Are Legitimately Good Now

One of the many reasons people came down so intemperately on Finn Jones during the first season of Iron Fist ( aside from the white savior narration that Netflix decided to go along with for the series ) was because the actoropenly verbalize about only training for three weeksfor the show and , well , you could tell .

Put more understandably : A lot of Danny ’s time of year one conflict scene were far from telling , something you ’d imagine would not be the case for the heroic lead of a warriorlike arts show . Iron Fist ’s fight fit under the direction ofthe show ’s raw choreographer Clayton Barberare a breath of new air . They ’re fluid and beastly and dynamical — showcasing a miscellanea of unlike fighting style and characters modifying their own technique to better beseem their environment . The show ’s hand to turn over combat in open spaces give character sentence and space to take a breath that is n’t choked with too much gawky comics dialogue , and the combat in tight stern are fast , complex , and clever .

We Disliked That

The Macguffin of the Season Was…a Bowl

It ’s already kind of odd that there ’s an apparently weirdly mere ritual — so long as you have a arena and , say , a coven of witchy tattoo artist — to transfer the power of the Iron Fist from one somebody to another willy - nilly . But after Davos robs Danny of his power and the back one-half of the time of year pivot to attempt to get that power back through another transference , there are right smart too many example of lines like “ They ’ve develop the pipe bowl ! ” and the like for someone to take with a unbowed grimace .

But beyond the repeated silly utterances of the bowl — enough to make Daredevil ’s time of year - long , multi - show - found mystery story around a really boastful maw seem like a dramatic chef-d’oeuvre — the cliche that the ritual brings to the mythos of the Iron Fist robs the show of some of its mystical allure . Why should we give care about the pressure sensation Danny feels to hold up up to the worth of the mantle , if it can be so easily attain and drop off ? Why even bother with the gaudery and circumstance of facing Shou - Lao and pock people against each other if the Iron Fist ’s ability can move back and onward so readily ? Iron Fist does n’t examine these interrogation as much as it should for the saki of doing an otherwise typical “ hero momentarily loses their powers ” storyline , and it ’s a disgrace .

The Meachums’ Arcs Were Boring

Do n’t get us incorrect , Jessica Stroup and Tom Pelphrey are as delightful as ever as the extremely nonadaptive Meachum sibling , wringing every pithy dig and aggravate outburst Joy and Ward go through for every fall of refugee camp they ’re deserving . But their plot line throughout season two sense more like excuses for them to still give ear around the plot instead of actual journeys for their quality .

In Ward ’s case , this is partly down to time , as not a passel is really spent exploring his struggle with heart revilement in favor of him palling around with Walker and Mary . But Joy ’s part in Davos ’ plan ( until she finally realizes just how bad he is ) feel trite and niggling to the gunpoint of absurdity — she pretty much teams up to pour down Danny just because he came back and change state her spirit upside down , rather than make any substantial motivation or care for either Davos ’ plight or Danny . Hopefully , now that Ward is being paired up with Danny going into time of year three , and Joy ascertain that her partnership with Walker is still a matter , they ’ll both have more interesting arcs next clock time around .

Davos’ Character Arc Wasn’t All That Interesting, Either

It ’s really unmanageable to chalk Davos ’ motivation up to more than petty green-eyed monster that he was n’t chosen to become the next Iron Fist . That ’s not an inherently “ bad ” drive for a scoundrel to have , but throughout the season , we repeatedly found ourselves asking just what Davos was after in the bigger system of things .

Sure , he spends many a scene pontificate to panicked people about his sight for a raw kind of law and Holy Order being brought to the land , but when you think about it … how was he going to make that find ? Even if he grapple to extinguish organized offence from the Chinatown area , at some distributor point his homicidal violent disorder would soak up enough aid to himself and his followers that at long last they very well likely would have been bring in down , even if he still had the Iron Fist . By the end of the season , Davos is less of a misunderstood revolutionary and more of a deranged madman who delight in running around punch unsuspicious multitude , and while that sorting of matter might wing in comic book , on screen door it just does n’t play .

Danny Rand Can’t Stand On His Own

Even though Iron Fist became a better show over the course of the second time of year , Danny did n’t really grow all that much in a way that abruptly made him more likable or compelling . Rather , Iron Fist ’s second time of year tones Danny down quite a bit , which would be a good thing were it not for the fact that there simply is n’t really enough to him to make him smoothen as a character .

When Danny expresses the encroachment that Matt Murdock hard on him during The Defenders , you get the sense that Danny , own no other real direction in life at the bit , internalized Matt ’s actions and decide to mimic them in a direction . Danny never quite fall across as if he ’s a man actively trying to carve out his own path , but rather going with the flow of those around him — and , more often than not , complicating them in ways that are wholly unnecessary . That being say , the time of year does end with Danny on the other side of the world with some new power , artillery , and a collaborator , meaning that this might actually be the beginning of Danny taking his portion into his own hands .
