Only the innovation nerds among us ( hello there ! ) might audit a city ’s typeface , but beautifully designed letter exercise a subtle power over us . The geometric inscription of the London Underground or the Art Nouveau stylings of the Paris Metro are as distinctive as the cities themselves .

We ’ve await atcity branding before , but we were curious to see what more of those case await like , so here they are , along with some of our other favorites from around the humanity .

Chattanooga — Chatype

London — Johnston

As in many metropolis , the typeface that looks most recognizably London is the one adorning its transit system . design by Edward Johnston , the namesake typeface has been used in London ’s public rapture since 1933 .

Back in 2003 , the Twin Cities held a contender inviting six design business firm to create a new municipal case . The competition was ultimately abortive — none were choose — but it did pep up one stunningly weird case by the Dutch firmLettError . Most fount descend in a handful of free weight and styles ( sheer , italic , light etc . ) , but Twin would come in ten wildly dissimilar ones . The architect even suggested the typeface couldmorph with the cities ’ weatherwhen display on digital screens . There was a digital rotation come — why cling to the demarcation of print ?

Berkeley — Rennie Mackintosh

One for the home squad . When I first moved to Berkeley , I was surprised to line up the city ’s prescribed signage rendered in such a whimsical typeface . ( But then again , maybe I should n’t have been surprised . ) Rennie Mackintosh is key out after the Scots creative person of the same name , a seminal figure in the Art Nouveau movement in the U.K. It was n’t really create by Mackintosh himself , but you could see the influence of his distinct Art Nouveau style in it . Berkeley has been using the typeface since 1996 , though now it might be more popularly associated withAmerican Horror Story . Hmm .
