Only the innovation nerds among us ( hello there ! ) might audit a city ’s typeface , but beautifully designed letter exercise a subtle power over us . The geometric inscription of the London Underground or the Art Nouveau stylings of the Paris Metro are as distinctive as the cities themselves .
The Guardian recently head for the hills afascinating articleon cities that have trademark or rebranded themselves with custom fount . We ’ve await atcity branding before , but we were curious to see what more of those case await like , so here they are , along with some of our other favorites from around the humanity .
The typefaces rarely have creative gens , which pee signified for , you have sex , branding . But they are varied and uncanny and capture something unique to each urban center .
Chattanooga — Chatype

A few years ago , a stria of designers elevate more than$11,000 on Kickstarterto make a typeface unique to the urban center . The former industrial city had fallen on hard times , and the designers wanted to do their own small part in revitalizing it . They ended up with Chatype , a New , geometric fount that also manages to draw out the urban center ’s honest-to-god frontier spirit . The metropolis has since dramatize the typeface for itsonline presenceand local public signage . The font is alsoavailable to download for complimentary .
London — Johnston

As in many metropolis , the typeface that looks most recognizably London is the one adorning its transit system . design by Edward Johnston , the namesake typeface has been used in London ’s public rapture since 1933 .
Johnston ’s student Eric Gill created a very like version of the typeface call Gill Sans that has since been dubbed the “ Helvetica of England . ” you may regain Gill Sans everywhere from the trains of the London and North Eastern Railway to Penguin books to the Microsoft Word program probably already on your computing machine .
Berlin — BMF Change

So many of the fonts commissioned by cities are sleek and geometrical , patently mean to have a modern edge . Milano City created byInarea Strategic Designstands out as a typeface that is libertine and indulgent , evoking chronicle without seeming fussy .
Eindhoven — Eindhoven

When Eindhoven redesign its logotype to be a trio of red zig zigzag in 2013 , they create a typeface to jibe . The typeface ( also foretell Eindhoven ) has the same jaggy edges , giving it a dynamic and unfinished quality . The Guardian notesthe original sketches were made of out of sticky tape measure , the resulting influence of which you may still see in the varsity letter ’ lack turning point .
Stockholm — Stockholm Type

In 2014 , the design authority Essen International was tasked with giving the Swedish urban center a whole unexampled spirit . So they gave St. Erik , Stockholm ’s supporter saint , a facelift and fare up with Stockholm Type , a unclouded geometrical face . Stockholm Type has appeared everywhere from city museum signage to the brochure of the Stockholm Kulturfestival . It is also proudly on video display all over theCity of Stockholm ’s website .
Minneapolis and St. Paul — Twin

Back in 2003 , the Twin Cities held a contender inviting six design business firm to create a new municipal case . The competition was ultimately abortive — none were choose — but it did pep up one stunningly weird case by the Dutch firmLettError . Most fount descend in a handful of free weight and styles ( sheer , italic , light etc . ) , but Twin would come in ten wildly dissimilar ones . The architect even suggested the typeface couldmorph with the cities ’ weatherwhen display on digital screens . There was a digital rotation come — why cling to the demarcation of print ?
Berkeley — Rennie Mackintosh

One for the home squad . When I first moved to Berkeley , I was surprised to line up the city ’s prescribed signage rendered in such a whimsical typeface . ( But then again , maybe I should n’t have been surprised . ) Rennie Mackintosh is key out after the Scots creative person of the same name , a seminal figure in the Art Nouveau movement in the U.K. It was n’t really create by Mackintosh himself , but you could see the influence of his distinct Art Nouveau style in it . Berkeley has been using the typeface since 1996 , though now it might be more popularly associated withAmerican Horror Story . Hmm .
