If you were a kid any time in the last fifty years , and youwere into illusion , you probably read Lloyd Alexander ’s Prydain books , startingwith The Book of Three . I certainlydid — over and over and over again .
But in 1964 , there were n’t any Chronicles of Prydain yet . The Book of Three , the first book , wouldcome out that twelvemonth . Alexander had written one book for children , Time Cat , and could not have bang thathe would go on to write more than thirty books for kids , and that his namewould be eternally listed in the annals of phantasy greats .
When I started as an editorial assistant at Henry Holt Booksfor Young Readers in 2005 , the thing I was most frantic about ( other than , youknow , have a job ) was that my Rolodex had Lloyd Alexander ’s phone identification number init . ( To be honorable , I was passably worked up about the Rolodex , too . ) Henry Holt isthe original publisher of the Prydain Chronicles and several other LloydAlexander Holy Writ , and I felt like I ’d bump off the prverbial jackpot .
That little card with Lloyd ’s info on it made my newjob seem real in a way that nothing else had . But what made it even more realwas the day I pick up the phone and there he was , on the other end of theline , talk to me as if I was n’t hyperventilate . ( I was . )
Although I never satisfy Lloyd in somebody , we developed afriendship over the phone , and I got to make out him as the warm , funny , deeplyintelligent man he was . He loved James Joyce and cat and general silliness , and had a knack for putting whoever he was talking to in a good mood .
Lloyd overhaul away in 2007 , but he would have been so excitedto see the fiftieth year of life for TheBook of Three . At Henry Holt , we ’re celebrating by set up out a gorgeousanniversary edition of the novel — sour on it is almost like speak to Lloydagain .
