Amazon has started beg the Federal Aviation Administration to let it start testing drone in its own backyard , according toa letterthat was made public Thursday .
The request explains that Amazon want to test drone alfresco of the testing sites designated by the FAA . There are six FAA - approve sites scattered throughout the country for testing drones like those to be used by Amazon , but Bezos & Co. claims it could innovate more rapidly if it could test nearer to home .
Amazon ’s plea let in some new details about how well the labor is going . Its drone , it claims , can now travel at over 50 mph while carry a 5 - pound sterling parcel , and it ’s now developing systems — with a team made up of roboticists , scientist , aeronautical engineers , remote - sensing expert , and a former NASA astronaut — to better agility , flight length , and obstacle avoidance , too .

In fact , Amazon is on its 9th drone iteration . For what seemed , and perhaps is , arather large marketing stunt , it ’s trusted taking it seriously . Whether the FAA will heed to all that , though , remain to be seen . [ FAAviaCNET ]
