It ’s been a trying time of year of American Horror Story , overloaded with smugly on - the - olfactory organ comment about the Trump earned run average , uncalled-for re - enactments of cults throughout history , and characters you bid would just die already . Last night ’s next-to-last episode revealed the sketchy need of alt - right fuckboy Kai Anderson ( Evan Peters ) . But at this point , why should we care ?

As you might think , I was immediately turn off by Cult ’s keenness to exploit the unrelenting apprehension of our current political climate — something many multitude , including myself , feel every prison term we read real - life word headlines — for amusement , in the most irritatingly heavily - handed way possible . Of course TV appearance and flick are going to be shaped by what ’s bechance in the actual world , but most of them do n’t have dialogue that sounds rend from a Facebook rant . Thougha center episodehinted that the show might deepen course and embark into some interesting storytelling , that has n’t happened . alternatively , we ’ve seen the two main part do all kinds of horrifying things that are played for jolt value , but do n’t really experience especially shocking .

Kai — who finally shed his blue man bun in last Nox ’s installment , “ Charles ( Manson ) in Charge”—has been incredibly predictable all time of year . This has nothing to do with Peters ’ performance , which is appropriately intense , and everything to do with the writing . He has a tragic and bizarre backstory ( he witness the slaying - felo-de-se of his parents , then preserved their soundbox in their sleeping room in the house where he still survive ) ; a charisma that lures all kinds of thwarted people ( African American newscaster Beverly Hope ; lesbian chef Ivy Mayfair - Richards ; a grouping of Aryan yes - men who go by code public figure like “ Speed Wagon ” ) to his cause ; and a childlike timbre that translates to both fierce irritability tantrums and a fondness for a truth - telling game that invoke a sacred pinky swear .

As Cult has locomote away from its buffoon defeat fling plot and focused more on Kai ’s political calling , it ’s had to add intrigue ( and give its title more weight unit ) by turn over into various gruesome cult radical throughout story , with the throwaway account that all political bowel movement are essentially cults ( … of personality ) . Peters , of course , encounter the leader in each scenario as he weave the story to his rapt following . This has lead to re - enactments both ghoulishly laughable ( Peters as Heaven ’s Gate leader Marshall Applewhite ) and alarmingly believable , include a sequence that should make the Jehovah of that coming Waco miniseries vex they chuck the wrong guy rope as self - styled christ David Koresh . As its title reveals , last night ’s episode take a frighteningly authentic depiction of the Manson family ’s 1969 slew execution of Sharon Tate and company . Since Manson did n’t actually participate in those killings , he arrest to bleed into Cult ’s main patch as a delusion of Kai ’s increasingly paranoid mind . Kai ’s impudently shaved head is a nod to Manson ’s , though he has yet to carve a swastika in his own os frontale .

Last night ’s big reveal , of course , was that Kai ’s political awakening come in courtesy of Bebe ( Frances Conroy ) , his anger - management counselor . We met this character a few week back within a totally different context : the Valerie Solanas episode , which instructed us to think that Solanas ’ militant feminist gang was responsible for for the execution attributed to the Zodiac Killer . Obviously that ’s farfetched , but it ’s not as outrageous as the idea that Bebe , a former Solanas lover , would spontaneously determine to convince Kai — during the form of their first counseling sitting , court - ordered after he slapped a Hillary Clinton supporter while watch out the final presidential debate — that he has a great purpose . His destiny , you see , is to “ break down the dyke ” and let loose “ the biggest turkey the universe has ever seen , ” which is of trend female madness .

Huh ? Somehow , this proud internet round fall for it , and that ’s evidently been his motivating this entire time — at least until he began make mass call him “ Divine Ruler , ” and success started going to his head ( along with visions of Manson , who reminds him he “ ca n’t rely the bitches ” ) . The fact that “ Charles ( Manson ) in Charge ” aired on the one - twelvemonth day of remembrance of Trump ’s election was kind of perfect ; Cult may not be an especially enjoyable show to watch , but its careening chaos does capture the mood of stomach - lurching horror that ’s been diffuse the country since November 8 , 2016 .

And “ female rage ” has certainly been unleash on the show , most notably in the form of what may be American Horror Story ’s most dear - to - hatred lineament ever : Sarah Paulson ’s Ally Mayfair - Richards . Again , no fault of the great Paulson , who stepped out of Ally ’s increasingly cark skin this week to rather signally be sanguinary Manson family member Susan Atkins . Ally is just awful , manifest and simple ; you ca n’t feel pitiful for her and you sure enough ca n’t rootle for her . But she is by far the most interesting part of Cult , since her fictitious character is the only one that ’s undergone any significant change throughout the season . We ’ve learn her transform from shrill scaredy - cat to coolheaded , psychotic manipulator , so do-or-die to reunify with her untried son that she ’s willing to defeat ( and frame others , who will then be defeat as a result ) to get what she wants . I wo n’t be sorry to see Cult oddment next calendar week , but I will perfectly be tune into the finale — not to see Kai get his just desserts , which are sure enough coming , but to see exactly how Ally is go to bring the hammer down .
