“ Customers hate fee because we feel like we ’re being fleeced , ” Thompson says . “ But in a style , we ’re the unity fleecing the airlines . This is an industry that misplace $ 51 billion between 2001 and 2011 . ”
What Thompson fails to mention is the various ways that governance ( on both thefederalandlocallevel ) have bailed out and subsidized the airline manufacture since its deregulating in the late 1970s . Sure , deregulating brought down prices , which was great for consumers . But when bailouts and sweetheart loans are toss around with our taxation dollars , it ’s difficult to argue that we as tax - paying consumers did n’t finally pay for a portion of that sure-enough fashioned ticket .
