Hyperion Power ’s plans to grow andsell portable nuclear reactorsfirst came to luminance last year — but most masses probably brushed off the approximation as some sorting of fantasy . Whether that is true or not , Hyperion seems to be committed to the project . Arecent interviewwith Hyperion CEO John Deal uncover that they have every aim of shipping their first product in June of 2013 . He also revealed a few interesting tidbits about their organization including the following quote about the possible action of release their fuel into a turkey :
Our fuel is very unique . It ’s U hydride . UH3 is the chemic convention . Low - enriched , about 10 per centum [ atomic number 92 isotope]-235 , the rest is U-238 . By comparison , bomb - grade fuel is about 98 percent enrich .
On the trouble of atomic waste matter :
The waste that comes out of our reactor after power 20,000 homes for 8 - 10 years is about the size of a football game . Using coal and gas over the same time frame , the wasteland flow for just you , after factoring in CO2 emission , would overflow Mile High Stadium in Denver . So our waste flow is very hard , and yes , we have to do something with it , but there are know ways of dealing with it . For security measure understanding , we ’re not disclosing what will happen to it , but it ’s not going to just sit in some bucketful somewhere . Recycling was “ baked in ” to our reactor design from the kickoff .
I ca n’t say that any of this chattering has done much to overpower my scepticism , but word is that he actually found a buyer for that first backyard system of rules scheduled for 2013 .
