PBS has a documentary about Orson Welles ’ infamous 1938War of the Worldsradio broadcast and the resulting hysteria that swept America . The only trouble ? Many scholars argue that the program did n’t actually cause mass panic at all .

According to Socolow , the anecdotal account run by paper of the time were deeply flawed and painted a skew picture of how Americans ( most of whom had n’t even heard the programme first - bridge player ) had responded to the now infamous program .

Cantril ’s 1940 book is flawed in so many crucial ways , as Socolow write in 2008 :
Admitting that his interviews did not be an accurate sampling of either the national universe or the wireless consultation that evening , Cantril nevertheless filled his curt volume with narratives of terror and fear .

“ What bothers me the most about the terror myth in general , and the PBS docudrama specifically , is that it certify such condescension towards the radio listening hearing of 1938 , ” Socolow says . “ I frankly do not think those listeners were much more persuasible — or easily panic — than we are today , and I do n’t think most of us today would panic . ”
