The rebirth metaphor were unattackable in Alfonso Cuarón ’s Gravity . But did you catch all of the niggling jot the theater director slipped into the last ? We spoke with the director about the mysterious meaning behind his blank motion-picture show ’s brawny finish . Here are his thoughts . Big prison term spoilers forward :
This movie is full of rebirth metaphors and analogy . [ Sandra Bullock ] getting into the fetal position with an umbilical cord floating behind her . How significant were those images to you in this film . And why does space lend itself to rebirth ? Why does it work so well in outer space ?
Alfonso Cuarón : That was the point , for us , of the plastic film . Adversities and the possibility of rebirth . And rebirth also metaphorical in the sensory faculty of gaining a new knowledge of ourselves . We have a character that is drifting metaphorical and literally , drift towards the void . A dupe of their own inactiveness . Getting far and farther away from Earth where life story and human connections are . And credibly she was like that when she was on planet Earth , before leaving for the military mission . It ’s a character who hold out in her own bubble . And she has to shred that skin to set off learning at the oddment . This is a role who we stick in the ground , again , and memorise how to walk .
Space already add itself to all these metaphoric possibilities . I call back rebirth in many way is part of the journeying for everybody , not only every human in Earth , but it ’s also the journeying of great characters . Great characters in lit or in cinema they go through the stage of rebirth and of a fresh savvy .
And also while in the dirt , [ that ] was something that we wanted to have as a parent view of life . A theatrical role who has to reconnect to her internal nurturing side . The astonishing side of life , that preserve us alive . Even if inside you feel you want to buy the farm , there ’s a magnanimous life pulse that keeps us alive .
So manifestly the red rocks and clay that [ Sandra ] pulls herself up onto [ after she lands ] was an knowing nod to the spiritual rebirth thought ?
Well yes , more literally there . She ’s in these mirky waters almost like an amnic fluid or a primordial soup . In which you see amphibians swim . She crawl out of the urine , not unlike early creatures in evolution . And then she go on all fours . And after going on all fours she ’s a bit curved until she is completely upright . It was the phylogenesis of life in one , warm shot .
