Everybody know that the movies can be a messy business — oftentimes , what extend to the big screen is the solvent of a process akin to stand by your fingers in a Cuisinart . And sometimes the original director of a task gets leave out just before filming first — as happened with The Wolfman . Or sometimes the music director gets strike down after shooting but during the editing phase , as was rumored to be pass off with the Judge Dredd film recently . We also learned just a couple weeks ago that Steven Spielberg arrive perilously stuffy to being sacked from Jaws halfway through shooting .

In any case , it ’s pretty much never a good sign when a movie ’s theater director gets sacked in the middle of product . Here are some notorious compositor’s case where a movie lose a director who ’d already yelled “ Action ! ” .

Enemy Mine ( 1985 )

Why was the conductor fired : Richard Loncraine was six weeks into shooting on this tale of a human and an exotic making ally , film on localisation in Iceland and Budapest , when he was let go . Reportedly studio White House were distressed with his dailies and thought costs were spiralling out of control .

Where you may see the transition : You ca n’t . The new music director , Wolfgang Petersen , started over altogether from scratch , and nobody ’s ever understand the Loncraine footage . We postulate star Dennis Quaid about it , and he told us the Loncraine version was “ gritty ” and he ’d love to see it himself .

Piranha II : The Spawning ( 1981 )

Why was the director fired : Actually two directors were more or less discharge from this picture . First there was the original manager , Miller Drake , who was fired after developing the task . And then his manager of special gist , the novice film director James Cameron , took over — only to be displace by the producer , who basically second - guessed his decision and then kicked him out of the redaction booth afterwards .

Where you may see the modulation : There ’s purportedly a home television version of the “ James Cameron excision ” of this moving-picture show , which Cameron reportedly edited in secret after he broke into the redaction entourage . So you could liken this to the prescribed cut . Butin a late interview with Vanity Fair , Cameron take , “ I worked on Piranha 2 for a few days and got send away off of it ; I do n’t put it on my prescribed filmography . So there ’s no sort of fond connection for me whatsoever . ”

Superman II ( 1980 )

Why was the manager fired : Richard Donner clash with the movie ’s producers over the soar upwards budget and issues like whether to pay million for a brief cameo by Marlon Brando . In the remnant , they brought in Richard Lester , who wound up reshooting most of the picture show so he could pass the expect 75 percent threshold for a only director credit .

Where can you see the modulation between film director : The stuff Lester shot is much goofy and more comedic than Donner ’s version ( which is now available , more or less ) . Lester also abandoned Donner ’s original ending , where Superman flies around the world so fast , he turns time back .

Waterworld ( 1995 )

Why was the director dismiss : Original director Kevin Reynolds was n’t actually raise ; he simply left the project before the last cutting off , leaving star / divo Kevin Costner to cease shot and cutting . He tell apart Entertainment Weekly : “ In the future Costner should only look in pic he directs himself . That elbow room he can always be working with his preferent actor and favorite director . ” There were also immense budget problems .

Where you may see the transition between directors : agree toan audience Reynolds did with Den of Geek , he tear a scene at the very ending of the film in which the fresh dweller of Dryland falter upon a brass which reads , “ Here , near this position , 1953 , Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary first determine foot on the summit of Everest . ” Reynolds loved that conniption and would have kept it in ; as he allege ( again , in this interview ) , “ I was like , “ Oh , of course ! Wow , the highest point on the planet ! That would have been dry land ! ” . And we get it ! We shot that . And they leave it out of the picture . And I ’m like , “ Whaaat ? ! ” . It ’s like the Statue of Liberty moment in Planet of the Apes . And I was like , “ Why would you provide that out ? ” . ”

Where you may see the conversion between manager : In a technological way , you’re able to see the flesh telephone circuit between Brest ’s footage and Badham ’s . Many sites point that “ several scene ” which Brest shot remain in the final cut , but it ’s hard to find a list of them . We do know Brest filmed the shot where David ( play by Matthew Broderick ) postulate Jim Sting and Malvin for assistance ( at left ) . Eddie Deezen , who plays Malvin , write about appearing in this scene , under Brest ’s direction , on his blog . The movie then start from that very static scene to a video collage , and the passage is uproariously stark .

Island of Dr. Moreau ( 1996 )

Why the theater director was fired : Original director Richard Stanley will just three days into shot and was substitute by John Frankenheimer . The studio apparently thought Stanley could n’t manage the sheer crazy that was Val Kilmer during a divorce , so they bring in Frankenheimer . unluckily , there was more than one crazy on bent . Brando and Kilmer contend , there were constant rewrite of the script which were shot only daylight after being compose , etc .

Where you may see the transition between directors : Frankenheimer brought in a squad to drastically alter Stanley ’s original script , so most of what remain is his .

Wizard of Oz ( 1939 )

Why the manager was fired : Initially , Norman Taurog was going to direct , but he did basically nothing before he was replace with Richard Thorpe . Thorpe shot a few shot , mostly Dorothy ’s first merging with the scarecrow , before manufacturer Mervyn LeRoy reviewed the footage and fired him . on the face of it , LeRoy feel Thorpe was rushing things and thereby deoxidise the pic ’s quality . Final director King Vidor , who shot most of the Kansas scene ( include “ Somewhere Over the Rainbow ” ) , took over for Victor Fleming after Fleming had to go exchange George Cukor in Gone with the Wind . ( Complicated , right ? ) Interestingly , Fleming alone receive credit for the film , and Vidor wait until after Fleming had died to admit his part in filming .

Galaxy S25

Where you could see the conversion between directors : Fleming ’s scenes are in color ; Vidor shot almost all of the sepia / black - and - white Kansas scenes . Richard Thorpe had a different actor play the Tin Man ( footage never demo ) , and only his skinny - ups of the Scarecrow continue in the moving-picture show .

The 13th Warrior ( 1999 )

Why the director was fired : The original director , John McTiernan , did most of the shooting . However , the source of the book on which the film was based , Michael Crichton , was called in to do reshoots . ( Since Crichton ’s book tries to explain away the Wendols , a mathematical group of creature - tegument - wearing cannibals , as Neanderthals who hold out extinguishing , this movie probably qualify as skill fiction . )

Dyson Hair Dryer Supersonic

Where you may see the modulation between music director : The fighting scene between Buliwyf and the Wendol leader at the end was not in McTiernan ’s original cut .

Supernova ( 1999 )

Why the director was evoke : This one is really confusing . First , Walter Hill was brought in to direct this film , afterthe original director , Geoffrey Wright , leave two months before production started . Hill want to make a dark , H.R. Giger - influenced “ Hellraiser in space ” movie . Then after Hill finished shooting , he and the studio both concord that reshoots were needed — but they could n’t agree what needed to be reshot . So Hill was replaced with a new film director , Jack Sholder , who did some reshoots . And then Sholder was out , and Francis Ford Coppola came in and recut the movie . It was Coppola , reportedly , who choose to insert some zero - universal gravitational constant gender between James Spader and Angela Bassett — which he accomplished by taking idle nude footage of Peter Facinelli and Robin Tunney and digitally darkening Tunney ’s skin so she could search like Bassett .

Where you may see the passage between directors : Presumably bighearted chunks of the picture are still Hill ’s work . Apparently one area where Sholder made change was when the ship virtually crashes into a black hole too soon on . In Hill ’s reading , the ship ’s autopilot stops the ship in metre . But in Sholder ’s , Spader rushes in and save the ship himself . Hillsaid in an interview :

Mine was a much darker visual sense . I can honestly tell you that I have yet to have seen it , but it ’s on cable a lot and sometimes I ’ll be surfing about and I ’ll sit there and keep an eye on about 4 minutes just to see what they ’ve fucked up , but James Spader ’s public presentation is still , I can see is quite interesting in it , I think Jimmy did a good line of work .
