A Minnesota man was arrested after authorities allege he fatally shot his wife last week just as a responding officer knocked on their front door and announced himself.
The shooting happened Friday at the couple’s Fish Lake Township home, which is located about 55 miles north of Saint Paul.
On Friday, just after 12 p.m., the sheriff’s office was called to the couple’s residence after being told there were “a large number of weapons” inside the home and that there were people arguing, according to the complaint.
A deputy walked up to the home and heard a man’s voice. He knocked on the front door and announced that he was a sheriff’s deputy, but there was no response.
A SWAT team and other law enforcement agencies were called and authorities said they had to use a police K-9 and a drone to get Mike out of the home, according to the complaint. He reportedly refused to exit the house.
The complaint states that a preliminary autopsy revealed Sarah had suffered three gunshot wounds to the head.
In aFacebook post, the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office alleged that the death of Sarah, who was a registered nurse at the county’s correctional facility since 2014, was a result of domestic violence.
“Our hearts are broken and our agency is devastated as we grieve the loss of our fellow employee, partner, and friend,” the statement reads. “Words cannot fully describe the shock and pain our agency and community are feeling. Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences are with Sarah’s family and friends.”
October is domestic violence awareness month, and this “tragic event is a reminder for all of us,” the sheriff’s office said.
Mike was taken into custody on charges of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the complaint. He is being held on $2 million bond and his next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 24.
It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.

“After 17 years of providing unconditional love and support, the person she should have been able to trust the most ended her life,” Sarah’s sister, Melissa Stockness, claimed on the fundraising page.
Sarah was described on the GoFundMe as someone who loved music, being outdoors, and spending time with her dogs and nephews.
The remainder of the proceeds will be donated to the Domestic Abuse Project.
