X - Files star Gillian Anderson has co - written her first novel , A Vision of Fire , and we ’ve got an single predilection of the audiobook , read by Anderson . Plus glimpses of some other masking concept that were more ten - Files - point . That ’s just one of the Quran from Simon & Schuster ’s young imprint Simon451 .
We utter to fourth-year editor Sarah Knight about what else to look from Simon451 .
Simon451 is a fresh imprint , publishing science fiction , fancy and post - apocalyptic playscript . Most of its titles will come out as e - books first , and then afterwards as print Word of God if sales guarantee it . The imprint ’s free fall 2014 launching includesA Vision of Fire by Anderson and Jeff Rovin , plus Orbs and Orbs II by online publication sensation Nicholas Sansbury Smith , The Protectors by Trey Dowell and The Undying by Ethan Reid . And next spring , Simon 451 will bring out The Dark Side by Anthony O’Neill , a noir crime novel set on a lunar dependency which was just optioned for film by twentieth Century Fox . say a free samplerhere .

Here ’s your sole excerpt , the prologue and chapter one of the audiobook ofA Vision of Fire :
Here are a few early natural covering images for A Vision of Fire that were sample , along with the publisher ’s note :
This was one of our first attempts at a book binding . We wanted something that looked like a big bestseller , and this certainly deliver — the vent is amazing — but in the closing we thought it was n’t specific enough to the actual write up .

For a little while , we tried experimenting with the classic X - Files esthetic , a atavism to Gillian Anderson ’s days as Agent Scully . Both of these covers are bold and vivid , but in the end , we thought relying too heavily on the X - Files ( no matter how much we have intercourse the show ) was just a bit too on - the - nozzle .
We hump we ’d found the veracious blanket as presently as we saw this version ! It was bold , exciting , and just a piffling bit scarey . The dark cityscape utter directly to the sense of foreboding that surrounds the story , and the symbol ( an important aspect of the story ) jot at the Scripture ’s speculative and orphic constituent .
“ We were seeing 50 percent of our sales coming from e - books , ” in these genres as well as romance and thrillers , says Knight . “ We did n’t have any mode to be putting out e - book archetype in a strategical and wise [ fashion ] . ” She points out that Simon & Schuster had taken on e - book sensation Hugh Howey and issue mark edition of his account book . “ That ’s what I ’m hoping for with all our source , except they ’re home grown to get down with . ”

east - book are unadulterated for these variety of books because they ’re a lower - cost option , similar to the way passel securities industry soft-cover ( MMPB ) account book were 30 years ago , Knight adds . “ The thing that those [ did n’t ] have that e - books do is just enormous flexibility in terms of pricing ” and packaging — include the ability to experiment with ultra - low prices for a while , but also to change a book ’s cover copy to punctuate one aspect of the story alternatively of another , if the selling does n’t seem to be figure out . Knight imagines saying , “ We ’re dwell on the dystopian angle , possibly we should be dwell on the buddy - and - sister angle ” instead — and being capable to change a Scripture ’s jacket written matter instantly .
“ I do n’t want to deprive citizenry who drop time read in print , but publication is becoming more of a ecological niche job , ” add Knight . “ I ’m not shed thing at the rampart and seeing what peg , I ’m throw three specific things at three specific [ groups of ] masses , ” because eastward - books can be so incredibly targeted . She see herself as doing what publishers have always done : take a novel format and run with it . “ It ’s not the container , it ’s the subject matter . ”
Knight says she ’s learned a lot from working with Sansbury Smith , who already had a lot of experience sell tocopherol - books , and who is already position out Orbs III early next class . She appreciates the ability to get books out cursorily and affordably . “ My ma was a thriller reader , and she would have to waitress a class for the new Sue Grafton or the fresh Mary Higgins Clark to fall out in mass - market soft-cover book , ” articulate Knight . “ We ’re just prove to give reader what they need , when they desire it . ”

Some other publishing company , like Tor , have launch Es - book imprints focusing on shorter books , like novellas , but Knight does n’t check that this format is needfully better suited to shorter works . The e - book consumers are “ voracious referee , ” she tell , who always want more . “ They just want to keep their olfactory organ in a book , so if we have a capacity to bring out a 30,000 or 40,000 novella by our authors in between their longer works and feed that political machine , keep them reading , ” that ’s a good thing . But so is arrange out full - length books more chop-chop , she indicate .
She says Simon451 has n’t carved out a special niche , other than “ great writing and great stories . ” She personally leans towards thrillers , but some of the other take on editor have been pick up high illusion books like The Dragon Round by Stephen Power .
“ I ’ve been thinking for a while , if the great unwashed can get real winner from self - publication , what do they need us for ? ” say Knight . “ So I ’m seek to cue hoi polloi that we do have value . ” Including the economic value - adds of copyediting , proofreading and book design , but also “ a publiciser and real attention . ” Thus far , only a couple of writer have balked at the idea of make their rule book fare out first as east - Word pilot .

Given that there are fewer risk in publishing vitamin E - playscript master copy , I asked whether we might see Simon451 take more chances on divers generator , including author of colouration . Knight responds :
I ’ve always been undecided to diversity in my tilt , but what I would say is we can take more chances that we might otherwise have had to say no to , for reasons such as ‘ Oh , this is really good and I really care it , but the author lives in Australia , and we ’re not going to have them for promotion and Barnes & Noble is n’t going to order copies . ’
She add that they can also take chances on authors who ’ve had books fail in the yesteryear , which might leave in depleted orders from bookstall — but it does n’t matter at all with online book sale . She also wo n’t be as likely to pass on books that are hard to categorize , because with brick - and - mortar bookstores you have to figure out where to shelve the playscript — something that ’s not a problem online .
