With attender from 195 countriesconvening Paris this weekfor the UN ’s COP21 mood talks , it ’s definitely fair to wonder if all that travel might in reality be a unsound affair for the climate . Wired did the maths .
Although many of the events around the talks have been scale back or cancel after theattacksearlier this month , an estimated 50,000 people are expected to travel to Paris this workweek , include not only heads of state but also reps from NGOs , clean DOE entrepreneurs , Bill Gates and his climate Dream Team , and plenty of journalists to cover it all . What kind of mood damage might these beneficent traveller inflict on the thawing satellite ?
Here are Wired ’s calculations :

If you tot up all the Bangkoks , Bermudas , Cape town , Sydneys , Santiagos , Samoas , Jakartas , Singapores , and capital of Sweden in between , the average length per traveller is about 9,000 miles , pear-shaped trip .
Those people will get on string , cars , but mostly aeroplane . When flown at full content ( and the airway diligence being what it is , and the Paris meetings being what they are , there ’s little reason to think the plane will be anything but packed ) , a Boeing 747 ( a glad spiritualist between secret jets and bullet trains ) gets about 16.5 mi per Imperial gallon of K fuel . Between 50,000 attendees , that ’s about 27 million gallons of the stuff .
When burned , every one of those 27 million gallons of jet fuel publish about 21 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere . add together up , all those planes flying to the Paris climate talks will release about 575 million pounds of CO2 .

Alone , that look like a really bounteous bit . Compared to the intact world , which give rise about 80 quadrillion pounds of CO2 each year , it ’s not much . In fact , all the travel for all the people to and from Paris equals about 22 seconds of spherical CO2 emissions . lend in two weeks of hotels , taxis , espressos , pastries , and wine toasts , and you could probably tack on another half second or so .
TheUN Framework Convention on Climate Change is going to release its own audited account , after the fact , so ease assured that the organiser are definitely recall about this . At least the Gallic government is purchasing carbon offsets to describe for the million of pounds emitted by travel .
It ’s worth wondering why we could n’t possibly manage to do this thing nigh . I get that merging in person helps carry the gravity of the billet , but seriously , it ’s 2015 : Have everyone Skype in their pledge and spend this week getting to figure out .

Still , it ’s important to note that 195 Carry Nation so far have made this a priority — that ’s a good thing . And hopefully , after this event , we wo n’t ever need have to have this kind of meeting ever again .
