Urbanization may hold the key to alleviating poverty, but at what cost can this come?
Nick Brandt wants his woolly rhino back . At least that ’s how the English lensman set about his essay onInherit the Dust , his latest photo project .
Unfortunately for Brandt , one C of industrialisation and urban development in the parky islet mean that the rhino — along with a horde of other animals who once call England home — will never return . “ splendid animal , a wonder to lay eyes on as they wander across the hills and forests of southern England,”Brandt writes . “ Of naturally , this was before my time . ”

throw its on-going vogue of urbanisation , Brandt fears that the idiom “ before my time ” will only gain prominence in Africa . Indeed , the World Bank estimatesthat 50 percent of Africans will last in urban space by 2030 — and that growth , as the African Development Bank Group notes , may come at a damage . “ The elaboration of urban center , ” ADBG writes , “ is generally at the disbursal of destruction of wood and other instinctive environs or ecosystems , and increasing pollution . ”
With this in mind , in 2014 Brandt set up out to “ re - introduce ” animals whose habitat have been lost to urbanization . To do so , Brandt traveled to urban zones throughout East Africa , where he put life story - size photos he had consume of elephant , zebras , and chimpanzees among them . Brandt would then photograph his two - dimensional subjects amid their new environment : African elephants underneath overpasses , chimp sit down in alley , zebras in slum .
While initially about the bionomic cost of developing , Brandt say the photo series quickly became about masses and the challenges they face in an urbanizing and urbanized Africa as well . When write about his photo “ Underpass with Elephants , ” for instance , Brandt spends the most prison term describing the people — not the life story - size elephant control board — in the photo .

“ They are all homeless , even the mother with very young baby and baby , who catch some Z’s beneath this underpass encircle by a cardinal Nairobi rotary , ” Brandt indite . “ The poison ice on the cake in relation to the homeless people is the cruelly juxtaposed billboard beyond , boast a well - to - do midway category African military man leaning back in a chair in his garden , with the tag personal line of credit beneath : Lean Back , Your Life is On Track . ”
Brandt ’s reflexion highlights a oecumenical challenge the surface area faces and will continue to present as more people move to metropolis . While it is true that , as economic expert Edward Glaeser notes , “ cities are the good itinerary we know out of poorness , ” it is also true that unless urbanization make out with investments in infrastructure , institution and system that make these city competitive , poverty level are unbelievable to slack .
In the lag , Brandt — who acknowledge that his views as a “ inner white guy wire from the West ” may not count much to those actually grip with these problem in a very real way — hopes that his series remind looker that , for better or bad , the ecological costs of development are shared across clip and place :
